I visited my local gun club, the “Desert Sportsman’s Rifle and Pistol Club”, to shoot steel with the “Las Vegas Steel”. It had been a while since I had shot steel at a club match.
The last time I shot steel at a club match I used my newly purchased XD9 Sub-Compact. And I can tell you, it is not very well suited for this type of shooting. I did quite poorly. The short barreled sub-compact is not well suited for shooting 8 and 10 inch round targets at distances of 15 to 25 yards under the pressure of time, while other shooters are watching.
I had recently purchased new full size Springfield Armory XDm9, and had not yet shot it on steel targets. I was anxious to see how it would do. Rather, I should say how well I would shoot with it.
As expected, I did much better with the full size XDm9. I also accomplished something I had been trying to do, but with little success. That is to slow down and focus on shooting more accurately. Speed is of little value if you can not hit your target. I focused on gaining a clear sight picture on each target, then executing a smooth trigger press. I was pleased with my performance, although the is much room for improvement.
